Spatio-Politics of Worth

This section introduces the concept of the spatio-politics of worth by examining how spatial arrangements and policy decisions shape who is considered “worthy” of living in and accessing different parts of the city. Drawing on Brazil’s historical and ongoing racial and social divisions, it highlights how urban planning, migration, and infrastructure have reinforced inequalities, pushing marginalized populations to the peripheries while privileging others in central, well-resourced areas. The analysis foregrounds questions about which groups cities were originally designed for and who holds the power to define urban belonging and legitimacy today.
